Is this tree still there?

A commemorative American elm, Ulmus americana, was planted in 1942Logo_our events_ElmTreesm in honor of George E. Stone, UMass professor and founder of the Massachusetts Tree Wardens’ and Foresters’ Association.  The location is noted as the southwest corner of the Shade Tree Lab on the UMass Amherst campus.

SMA Municipal Forestry Institute 2014

SMA logoThe Society of Municipal Arborists presents this unique leadership and professional development opportunity. The next annual Municipal Forestry Institute will be held February 23-28, 2014 at the Lied Lodge and Conference Center of the Arbor Day Farm in Nebraska. Past MFI classes have included over 850 City Foresters and City Arborists, Urban Foresters, Municipal Arborists, Planners, Tree Wardens, State Urban Forestry Staffs and Municipal Tree Advocates. The registration deadline is December 1st.

Urban Forest Strike Team adds new members to roster

USFS Strike TeamTwenty-two arborists and foresters recently completed the Urban Forest Strike Team training for task specialists in Springfield MA.  The two-day workshop included both indoor presentations and outdoor field exercises. The latest task specialist training was a joint effort of the U.S. Forest Service, Massachusetts DCR Urban & Community Forestry Program, MTWFA, and City of Springfield Forestry. The training session was funded with federal money under a four-year cooperative agreement between the U.S. Forest Service Northeastern Area and MTWFA.
