Seedlings Program
Arbor Day/Earth Day is a day to celebrate the importance of trees and to promote the benefits that trees provide for people and the environment.
The Massachusetts Tree Wardens’ and Foresters’ Association (MTWFA) Seedling Program celebrates Arbor Day/Earth Day by supplying bulk seedlings to promote the planting and caring for trees in
Massachusetts.
Proceeds from the seedling program support the MTWFA Scholarship Fund. Scholarships are awarded annually in March to students enrolled in arboriculture and urban forestry programs statewide.

How Does It Work?
Beginning in mid-March and continuing through the end of April, our nursery suppliers ship individual orders directly to purchasers. The seedlings must be delivered by May 2nd to avoid damage from extreme temperatures during shipping.
Who Orders Seedlings?
Seedling purchasers include municipalities, garden clubs, private firms, arborists, other interested individuals, and other organizations.
What Types of Seedlings?
Seedlings offered for sale include both evergreen and deciduous trees. Species and prices vary from year to year based on nursery availability. The minimum order is 100 seedlings.
Bare Root or Pre-Bagged?
Seedlings are sold either bare root (not in bags) or pre-bagged (each seedling is in a bag with a promotional label including planting instructions). For the bare root stock, purchasers will have the option to order plastic bags with printed planting instructions. Purchasers who order bags place each seedling in a bag, add soil or peat moss, and secure the bag with a tie (included).
How are Seedlings Used?
Seedlings may be distributed to schoolchildren and other Arbor Day/Earth Day participants. The seedling gifts may be part of a ceremony or presentation that promotes Arbor Day/Earth Day, and the value of trees to people and the environment. Buyers have also used seedlings as favors at weddings and as promotional items at Arbor Day/Earth Day events.
