Asian Longhorned Beetle Field Trip

Loading Events

This Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) workshop includes a field trip in Worcester, Massachusetts, where the ALB has created havoc throughout the city and beyond. Locally organized and collaboratively sponsored by the LillyLibrary.Org and TreeNorthampton.Org’s educational outreach, the workshop begins by focusing on ALB identification and field observation, how to identify ALB, the basic mechanisms of damage to a host tree and resulting damages, and a history of the ALB infestation in Worcester County.

Next, the participants will move into the field to observe the Regulated Area to Suppress & Control the ALB. Site observations include viewings of the infested wood disposal site, ALB survey sites, streets with successful replanting, and streets that were unaffected by the infestation.  Depending on conditions of the day and staffing, a ground crew and/or climbers will be available to discuss their practices and work. The program has the potential for a climbing demonstration and examples of field work.

On August 22, Tuesday morning, we will assemble in Worcester from 8:30am to 12:00pm for classroom instruction and a field trip. Carpool suggested (please make contact for information).

The workshop will most benefit tree professionals, conservation volunteers and members of the public having an interest in the tree health of forest and urban environments.

Pre-registration is requested. Use the contact information below to register, and tree professionals: please let us know if you need to register for arborist CEU’s. Carpool suggested (please make contact for information).
